Start-Up Kids: Encouraging Tree Care and Environmental Awareness at a Young Age

The J.J. Mauget Co. of Arcadia, Ca., the world leader and pioneer in tree injection technology, was proud to recently be invited to participate in an ArborDay workshop sponsored by the Temple City California Parks and Recreation Department at Live Oak Park as part of the Children’s Enrichment Program. Also in attendance was the Temple City Mayor Tom Chavez.

The J.J. Mauget Co. is responsible for the birth of modern tree injection technology.
Mauget’s own Technical Support Expert, Ann Hope, introduced the children to some of the exciting aspects of caring for trees and plants including the requirements they need to grow strong and healthy.

She explained to the kids how closely related to trees humans are, even sharing some common biology.

The children were given the opportunity to learn the different aspects of arboriculture through a fun hands on experience. They discussed several different species of trees through samples of branches and how to determine a specific tree based on its leaves.  The workshop also emphasized the importance of understanding our impact on the environment by discussing how trees and plants function and grow as well as how we can help them by providing the essential needs for their growth such as sunlight, water, fertilizers and even insecticides to protect them from harmful bugs.
After an exciting discussion, the young future arborists and scientists were then able to get up close and personal with some of the insects that feed on our trees.

Using a special lens, they were able to get a clear look at the tiny pests that would normally escape the naked eyes. They were also shown the different parts of tree and plant anatomy and how they function together to keep them healthy.
The Arbor-Day program was as much fun for the kids as it was for Mauget’s Ann Hope in conducting it. The kids were made aware of the many opportunities they have  in keeping the environment healthy and vibrant by having a hands-on outdoor fun day.

Mauget feels it is vital to the future of our planet and the health of our trees to educate children early about their impact on the environment.  Through workshops such as this Arbor Day celebration we were thrilled to show children the importance of caring for our beautiful trees so that we can enjoy them for years to come.  It was our privilege to have been invited to participate and we look forward to educating more children and adults whenever possible.  You are never too young or old to learn something new about our glorious trees!
